Musicians Ear Plugs
One area that we particularly focus on is musicians ear plugs and monitoring equipment.
These systems come in 2 basic types; active and passive.
Passive plugs simply filter the overall sound levels by different amounts, keeping harmful noise levels from damaging the hearing. We supply many of these units for professional and amateur musicians and gig-goers.
The plugs are specially designed to lower volume without messing up how music sounds, unlike off-the-shelf foam plugs, which can often muffle sharper, higher frequency sounds and make everything feel blocked. Custom plugs use specialised filters to create an even reduction across frequencies, so you still hear the full mix clearly, but are safe from harmful noise levels. We work with several top brand suppliers of these products.
Active systems are more complex, with electronic components built in to the ear plugs to provide bespoke amplification for the individual’s requirements.
We’ve been involved in fitting this type of system to top musicians for many years now and are a currently the audiologist of choice in Scotland for leading brand, Cosmic Ears.
These are the kind of earplugs that you see worn but highly successful musicians and pop stars, and we have worked with many top names over the years. These systems are quite affordable now and are worn by aspiring talent too.
Taking silicon casts of the ear for this type of system is an exceptionally precise job, with the impression going right down near the eardrum and the casting tolerance levels extremely low. It's quite a stressful business for the audiologist to get right, but one that Stephen, with nearly 40 years of experience, is quite comfortable with.
We've worked with many top musicians over the years. Some are more memorable than others: Gian Carlo Menotti, the composer and partner of Samuel Barber, of the adagio fame, he was a lovely guy, who fled N.Y. and ended up living out in the sticks outside Edinburgh.
Steve Miller needed our services when he was in town for gig, my colleague and I fought over who would deal with him and I lost that time. I heard he was really cool.
Perhaps the two that amuse me the most are Jerry Schiff, who informed me he had been Elvis's bass player and I didn't believe him. Why would someone like that be living in the Scottish Borders? It took some online digging for the penny to drop.
And going way back, we used to see a fairly rough-looking pair of identical twins hanging outside the guitar shop next door to our clinic. Years later, they would go on to write some pretty catchy tunes. We ended up doing work for their band too.
Bottom line – if you make music for a living or love loud shows, grab a pair. Your future ears will thank you.
